September 14, 2007: Representative Wilson Seeks Federal Funds for Cornucopia
Representative Wilson visited Cornucopia on September 14, 2007, following the release of her press release, copied below.
Wilson has requested $100,000 in federal funds for Cornucopia
Congresswoman Heather Wilson today visited with staff and clients at a South Valley facility that serves developmentally delayed adults and seniors and announced that she has secured $100,000 for facility improvements. Wilson says she's working on delivering the federal funds for Cornucopia Adult Day Services. The money was improved in federal legislation that passed the U.S. House of Representatives and now awaits action in the Senate.
"Cornucopia would like to thank Congresswoman Wilson and her staff for their efforts in helping bring recognition to our culturally sensitive grass roots organization," said Michelle Bishop-Couch, the organization's incoming Executive Director. "Cornucopia is in deperate need of an accessible and safe structure. This building supports our community in providing services alleviating isolation, loneliness, hunger, neglect, exploitation, abuse and institutionalization for the frail elderly and developmentally disabled."
"Cornucopia provides a valuable service in the South Valley and I'm proud to support their effort," says Wilson. "We'll keep working this year to make this funding a reality."
Wilson secured the federal funding--for Cornucopia facility renovations and improvements--in the Departments of Transportation and Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Act for FY 2008. The bill has passed the House and now will be considered in the Senate.
Cornucopia serves developmentally delayed adults and seniors at their facility, providing a vital service in the community and getting clients out of their homes for exercise and stimulation. Some come from abusive homes.
Cornucopia officials say the funding will be used for a heating system, automatic doors at client entrances/exits, automatic vehicle gate and general building improvements and furniture.
